The Real Estate Agent Journal is a digital publication dedicated to the people behind the transactions, spotlighting the real estate agents and brokers who shape the markets, neighborhoods, and communities we call home. Rather than focusing solely on listings or market headlines, The Real Estate Agent Journal explores the stories behind your favorite professionals. Each article offers a closer look at how agents and brokers got started, what motivates their work, and what truly sets them apart when guiding clients through important decisions. These stories reveal the experience, values, and perspective that influence how they show up for buyers, sellers, investors, and families navigating change. Through thoughtful interviews and in-depth features, the magazine shares local insight, neighborhood knowledge, and personal journeys that go far beyond surface-level bios. Readers gain a deeper understanding of how real estate professionals think, how they approach complex situations, and how they help people move forward with confidence and clarity. Whether you’re researching who to work with, learning how great agents operate, or simply curious about the human side of real estate, The Real Estate Agent Journal offers an authentic look at the people guiding one of life’s biggest decisions. Because real estate isn’t just about property — it’s about people.
Thank you so much for taking the time to sit with us today! Before we jump in, could you share a little about yourself and the areas you serve?
Thank you for having me. I’m Canaan Lucas, team leader of Team Lucas at Benchmark Realty. I serve buyers and sellers throughout Middle Tennessee, including Wilson County, Williamson County, Davidson County, and the surrounding areas.
I came into real estate a little later in life after spending many years in ministry and leadership roles focused on helping people through major life transitions. That background shaped the way I approach this business today. While real estate is certainly about homes, contracts, and negotiations, I’ve found it’s often really about people navigating change. Every move has a story behind it.
As the leader of Team Lucas, my vision has always been to build a business that values relationships over transactions. We want our clients to feel informed, supported, and cared for throughout the process. Whether someone is buying their first home, selling a longtime family home, relocating, downsizing, or stepping into a new season, our goal is to provide honest guidance and be a trusted resource from beginning to end.
Middle Tennessee is home, and I love serving the communities that have become such an important part of my own story. It’s a privilege to help people make confident decisions and walk alongside them during some of life’s biggest milestones.
Everyone has a reason behind the work they choose. What’s the ‘why’ behind your real estate career?
My path into real estate wasn’t a straight line, and honestly, I’m grateful for that. For more than twenty years, I served as a worship leader in churches while raising a family and investing in people in different leadership roles. Throughout those years, I developed a deep love for connecting with people, building relationships, and helping others navigate important seasons of life.
Real estate came later. I stepped into this career at a point when many people might have thought it was too late to start something new. But I’ve always believed that growth doesn’t have an expiration date. What began as a new challenge quickly became a passion because I realized real estate isn’t really about houses. It’s about people, their goals, their dreams, and the life they’re building.
What keeps me motivated today is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference. Whether I’m helping a first time buyer purchase a home, guiding a seller through a major transition, assisting someone with an investment property, or helping a family relocate, every transaction represents a chapter in someone’s story. Being trusted to walk alongside people during those moments is something I never take lightly.
Real estate has also given me the opportunity to build Team Lucas, which has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey. We’ve built our business around relationships, trust, and serving people well. At the end of the day, that’s my why. It’s not just helping people buy or sell property. It’s helping them move forward into whatever comes next.

From culture to community, there’s always something special about a market. What makes yours stand out?
One of the things I love most about Middle Tennessee is that it offers a little bit of everything. You can enjoy the energy, opportunity, and culture of Nashville while still finding communities that feel connected, welcoming, and rooted in a strong sense of home. Whether it’s the historic charm of Franklin, the growth happening in Wilson County, the family friendly neighborhoods throughout Williamson County, or the small town feel that still exists in many surrounding areas, each community has its own personality.
What really makes this market stand out, though, is the people. As someone who has lived, worked, worshiped, and built relationships here for many years, I’ve watched Middle Tennessee continue to grow while still maintaining the values that draw people here in the first place. There’s a genuine sense of community that you don’t find everywhere.
From a real estate perspective, it’s also a market filled with opportunity. We continue to attract businesses, families, entrepreneurs, and retirees from across the country. That creates opportunities not only for homeowners but also for those looking to invest and build long term wealth through real estate.
For me personally, this area is special because it’s home. It’s where I’ve raised a family, built a business, served in churches, and developed relationships that have lasted for decades. When I help someone buy, sell, or invest here, I’m not just helping them complete a transaction. I’m helping them become part of a community that I genuinely love.
In a competitive industry, what do you feel makes you truly different from the rest?
I think what sets me apart is that I’ve never viewed real estate as a sales job. I’ve always viewed it as a people business.
There are a lot of talented agents in our industry, and I’m grateful to be part of a profession filled with people who work hard for their clients. For me personally, the difference comes down to how I approach relationships. I’m not interested in high pressure tactics or convincing someone to make a move they’re not ready for. My goal is to provide honest advice, clear communication, and the information people need to make the best decision for themselves and their families.
I also think life experience matters. Before real estate, I spent decades leading worship, serving in churches, raising a family, building teams, and walking through my own seasons of growth and change. Those experiences taught me how to listen, how to lead, and how to stay calm when things don’t go according to plan. Those skills serve my clients every day.
As the leader of Team Lucas, I’ve worked hard to build a business that values relationships over transactions and long term trust over short term results. Many of our clients become friends, and many of our referrals come from people we’ve had the privilege of serving in the past. To me, that’s one of the greatest compliments we can receive.
At the end of the day, I want people to feel like they have someone in their corner. Someone who will tell them the truth, advocate for their best interests, and walk with them from start to finish. That’s the kind of agent I strive to be.

What’s your specialty as a realtor, and how does it help your clients get better outcomes?
I wouldn’t say my specialty is limited to one type of client or one segment of the market. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to help first time buyers, growing families, empty nesters, investors, and people relocating both into and out of Middle Tennessee. What ties all of those experiences together is helping people navigate change well.
If there’s one thing I’m especially passionate about, it’s helping clients make informed decisions. Real estate can feel overwhelming, and there’s no shortage of opinions online. My job is to help cut through the noise, provide clear guidance, and help people understand their options so they can move forward with confidence.
As the leader of Team Lucas, we’ve built our approach around communication, education, and strong advocacy. We invest heavily in marketing for our sellers, strategic negotiations for our buyers, and creating systems that help our clients feel supported from beginning to end. We want people to know what’s happening, what comes next, and that they have someone looking out for their best interests.
I also believe that every client deserves the same level of care, whether they’re purchasing their first home, selling a luxury property, or building an investment portfolio. Real estate isn’t one size fits all, and neither is the way we serve people.
At the end of the day, better outcomes happen when clients have the right information, a solid strategy, and an agent they trust. That’s where I believe Team Lucas brings the most value.
Let’s go a little deeper. What’s something you do behind the scenes that clients may not realize but really makes a difference?
One thing clients may not realize is how much of my job happens long before a home ever hits the market or before an offer is written. A lot of what creates a successful outcome happens behind the scenes through preparation, strategy, and problem solving.
For sellers, that often means studying the market, analyzing competing homes, helping prioritize improvements that will actually provide a return, coordinating vendors, reviewing marketing plans, and making sure we’re positioned correctly from day one. For buyers, it can mean researching neighborhoods, identifying potential concerns before they become problems, evaluating resale value, and helping them think through decisions beyond just whether they like the house.
I also spend a lot of time managing details that clients never have to worry about. Coordinating with lenders, title companies, inspectors, contractors, appraisers, and other agents requires constant communication. When things don’t go according to plan, and in real estate they sometimes don’t, much of my work is finding solutions before they become bigger issues.
One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that clients rarely remember every contract detail, but they do remember how they felt throughout the process. Did they feel informed? Did they feel supported? Did they feel like someone was looking out for them? That’s something I care deeply about.
The goal is for my clients to feel confident and at peace because they know someone is paying attention to the details, advocating for their interests, and helping them navigate the process every step of the way.

From your perspective, what’s one piece of advice every buyer or seller should know before entering the market?
If I could give one piece of advice to both buyers and sellers, it would be this: make decisions based on your life, not the headlines.
Every week there’s a new article, prediction, or social media post telling people it’s either the perfect time to buy or the worst time to buy. The reality is that real estate is personal. The right time to make a move depends far more on your goals, finances, and season of life than it does on trying to perfectly time the market.
I’ve seen people wait years for the “perfect” market conditions only to realize they missed opportunities that would have made sense for them. I’ve also seen people move forward confidently during uncertain markets because the decision aligned with their family’s needs and long term goals.
For sellers, my advice is to focus on the market that’s actually in front of you, not the one you wish existed. Pricing and positioning a home based on today’s buyers will almost always produce better results than chasing yesterday’s market.
For buyers, remember that the monthly payment matters more than the interest rate headline. Rates can change over time. The right home in the right financial situation can still be a great investment, even when the market feels uncertain.
The people who are happiest with their real estate decisions are usually the ones who understand their goals, have a solid strategy, and stay focused on what matters most to them rather than getting distracted by market noise.
Before you run off, could you give us your go-to advice for readers—and let everyone know the best way to connect with you.
If there’s one thing I’d leave readers with, it’s this: don’t be afraid to ask questions early.
Whether you’re thinking about buying, selling, investing, or you’re simply curious about what your options might be, having a conversation doesn’t obligate you to make a move. Some of the best decisions happen when people give themselves time to gather information and develop a plan before they’re ready to act.
Real estate can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. My goal has always been to help people understand their options, make informed decisions, and move forward with confidence when the time is right for them.
If you’d like to connect, I’d love to hear your story and learn more about your goals. You can find me through Team Lucas at Benchmark Realty, on social media, or at TeamLucasAgents.com. Whether you’re ready to make a move now or simply have questions about the market, I’m always happy to be a resource.
Thank you again for the opportunity to share a little of my story and what I love about serving people through real estate.
