The Real Estate Agent Journal is a digital publication dedicated to the people behind the transactions, spotlighting the real estate agents and brokers who shape the markets, neighborhoods, and communities we call home. Rather than focusing solely on listings or market headlines, The Real Estate Agent Journal explores the stories behind your favorite professionals. Each article offers a closer look at how agents and brokers got started, what motivates their work, and what truly sets them apart when guiding clients through important decisions. These stories reveal the experience, values, and perspective that influence how they show up for buyers, sellers, investors, and families navigating change. Through thoughtful interviews and in-depth features, the magazine shares local insight, neighborhood knowledge, and personal journeys that go far beyond surface-level bios. Readers gain a deeper understanding of how real estate professionals think, how they approach complex situations, and how they help people move forward with confidence and clarity. Whether you’re researching who to work with, learning how great agents operate, or simply curious about the human side of real estate, The Real Estate Agent Journal offers an authentic look at the people guiding one of life’s biggest decisions. Because real estate isn’t just about property — it’s about people.
We appreciate you taking the time to chat with us. Before we spotlight this stunning listing, could you share a bit about you and the service areas you cover?
Thank you so much for having me! I’m Alexia Bertsatos, a Global Real Estate Advisor with SERHANT., specializing in luxury real estate, relocation, and international investments. I primarily serve Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, the East Valley, and Flagstaff’s beautiful Pine Canyon community.
My journey began in architecture, design and real estate in London, where I also worked with international real estate investors before making Arizona my home in 2010. With over 25 years of experience spanning architecture, design, and real estate, I bring a unique perspective to the homes I represent.
Having grown up in Athens, lived in London, and settled in Arizona, I understand that finding a home is about much more than the property itself. My architectural background gives me a deep appreciation for exceptional design, craftsmanship, and the stories behind each home. I believe true luxury isn’t simply a price point. It’s about the experience, the relationships we build, and the level of service we provide.
Before we dive into specific spaces, what’s the overall feel and defining character of this luxury home?
La Serena is one of those rare homes that makes you feel something the moment you see it. Nestled within the beautiful Pine Canyon community in Flagstaff, it’s an extraordinary blend of architecture, nature, and artistry.
What makes this home particularly special is its story. The builder’s inspiration began in Indonesia, long before the home itself was conceived. That vision ultimately evolved into a remarkable journey to create something truly one of a kind decades later.
There’s an incredible sense of intention throughout the property. Every space feels thoughtfully connected to its surroundings, creating an atmosphere that is both dramatic and peaceful. In fact, La Serena was the backdrop for a film, which speaks to just how cinematic and distinctive this property truly is.
For me, La Serena isn’t simply a luxury residence. It’s a work of art with a story to tell, and that’s what makes it unforgettable.
Are there any design elements, upgrades, or historical pieces that make this property truly one-of-a-kind?
What fascinates me most about La Serena is how its architecture tells a story of patience, craftsmanship, and vision. Having studied architecture myself, I appreciate homes where design goes beyond aesthetics, and this is certainly one of them.
Many of the home’s most remarkable elements were created by Jason Scott’s team of 200 craftsmen in a village on the Indonesian island of Madura. The 33-foot-long bridge, for example, took eight months to complete. It was then disassembled, carefully coded, and shipped across the ocean to Arizona, where it was reassembled at the house. The massive glass floor panel alone required ten men to install.
The home is also the culmination of decades of collecting. Jason began gathering wood in 1995, setting aside unusually large or special pieces from old structures for the dream home he hoped to build one day. That vision is reflected throughout La Serena, from the hand-carved reclaimed teak columns and oversized entrance corbel to the upper-level hallway wall, which incorporates reclaimed wood from many different structures and steel salvaged from retired ships in Surabaya.
Even the three-story staircase was built in the village, outdoors in the forest, because it was too large to construct inside the workshop. It spans three levels and was supported by the surrounding trees during construction before being shipped and assembled in Flagstaff.
One of my favorite things about showing this property is watching people’s reactions as they move through it. It’s not a home you fully appreciate through photographs. You need to experience the spaces, the craftsmanship, and the atmosphere firsthand.
What makes La Serena so extraordinary is that every detail has a story. It doesn’t try to look like every other luxury mountain home. It has its own identity, shaped by decades of patience, dedication, and craftsmanship, and that is increasingly rare.

From materials to craftsmanship, what insider-level elements of this home stand out to you as a luxury specialist?
Coming from an architectural background, I tend to look beyond the obvious finishes and focus on how a home was conceived, how materials were selected, and how everything comes together.
What stands out about La Serena is the extraordinary level of craftsmanship and the authenticity of its materials. We’re not talking about mass-produced finishes designed to imitate character. Much of the reclaimed teak, architectural woodwork, and structural detailing has a history that predates the home itself.
What I find particularly fascinating is the combination of traditional Indonesian craftsmanship with the engineering required to bring these monumental pieces together in Flagstaff. It’s one thing to design something beautiful on paper. It’s another to execute it at this scale.
And perhaps the greatest luxury here is something you can’t easily replicate: time. The years spent sourcing materials, the artisans involved, and the attention given to each element have created a home with a depth and character that simply cannot be manufactured overnight.
To me, that’s the difference between an expensive home and a truly exceptional one.
Let’s talk about the location. What makes this neighborhood or community such a desirable place to live?
What I love most about Pine Canyon is that it offers a completely different side of Arizona, one that many people don’t expect. Nestled among towering ponderosa pines in Flagstaff, it’s a beautiful mountain retreat where luxury, nature, and community come together.
Pine Canyon offers an exceptional lifestyle. At the heart of the community is a championship 19-hole golf course designed by Jay Morrish and a beautiful 35,000 sqf clubhouse with dining, a full service spa, fitness facilities, and gathering spaces. For families, Camp Pine Canyon is particularly special, offering swimming pools, waterslides, tennis, pickleball, basketball, and even an ice rink. There’s also Trout Creek Park, with fishing, playgrounds, and outdoor gathering areas.
But what truly sets Pine Canyon apart is the sense of community. It’s a place where neighbors become friends, families create lasting memories, and every season brings something different to enjoy.
Flagstaff itself is equally special. You experience all four seasons, from cool summer evenings and beautiful fall colors to snowy winters and endless opportunities for hiking, skiing, and exploring the outdoors. And being just a couple of hours from the Phoenix metropolitan area makes it an ideal destination.
Having lived in different parts of the world, I’ve come to appreciate places that offer both a strong sense of belonging and an exceptional quality of life. Pine Canyon delivers exactly that. It’s not just about owning a beautiful vacation home; it’s about having a place to escape, reconnect, and create memories for generations.
Luxury is more than a price tag. What aspects of this home create a genuinely elevated living experience?
I’ve always believed that true luxury isn’t defined by a price tag. It’s defined by what cannot easily be replicated. And La Serena is a perfect example of that.
What elevates this home is its originality. In a market where so many luxury properties feature similar finishes and designs, La Serena is unapologetically different. It’s a home where architecture, art, and craftsmanship come together in a way that feels both extraordinary and deeply personal.
There’s also something incredibly luxurious about the setting. Being surrounded by the ponderosa pines of Pine Canyon, enjoying the privacy and tranquility of the mountains, while having access to an exceptional private club lifestyle, creates an experience that’s difficult to find elsewhere.
But perhaps what I appreciate most is that this home wasn’t created to follow a trend. It was built to fulfill a vision. And to me, the ultimate luxury is owning something truly irreplaceable, something with character, history, and a story that no other home can tell.

Luxury listings often require a different approach—what advice or outlook would you offer to readers curious about this space?
One of the biggest misconceptions about luxury real estate is that a beautiful home will simply sell itself. In reality, the more unique a property is, the more thoughtful and strategic the approach needs to be.
Luxury buyers aren’t just purchasing square footage, finishes, or a prestigious address. They’re investing in a lifestyle, an experience, and often something they can’t find anywhere else. Understanding what makes a property truly special, and knowing how to communicate that to the right audience, is essential.
For sellers, my advice is to choose an advisor who understands not only the local market but also how to position a property on a national and international stage. Exceptional marketing, compelling storytelling, strategic pricing, and access to the right network can make an enormous difference. That’s one of the reasons I value being part of SERHANT., where innovative marketing and global exposure are central to our approach.
For buyers, I always encourage looking beyond the obvious. Consider the architecture, quality of construction, long-term value, and, most importantly, how the property fits the life you want to live.
At the end of the day, luxury real estate is about much more than the transaction. It’s about understanding people, recognizing value, and creating an experience worthy of the property itself.
This has been a wonderful walkthrough. As we close, what final advice would you offer—and how can people learn more about working with you?
Thank you so much for having me! It’s been a pleasure sharing the story of La Serena, because homes like this remind us why real estate is so much more than buying and selling property.
My advice, whether you’re buying or selling, is to work with someone who takes the time to understand your goals, appreciates what makes a property unique, and has the experience and network to guide you through the process. The right real estate relationship should extend well beyond the transaction.
Having lived and worked internationally, I’ve always believed that real estate is ultimately about people, connections, and the places we choose to call home. Whether you’re searching for a luxury mountain retreat, relocating to Arizona, or exploring opportunities across borders, I’d love to be part of that journey.
And if La Serena has captured your imagination, I would love the opportunity to show you this extraordinary home in person. Some properties simply need to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
