There was a time when being a great real estate agent was relatively simple to define. You knew your market, built relationships, understood how to sell, and worked your sphere. Marketing helped people find you, but ultimately, your reputation was built one client and one transaction at a time. That model isn't disappearing, but the environment around it is changing quickly. Technology has transformed how consumers discover homes, research professionals, and decide who they trust. Now artificial intelligence is accelerating that shift. The question isn't whether AI will change the role of the real estate agent. It already is. The more interesting question is what happens to the role of the agent when technology can handle more and more of the work that once consumed their time. I believe the answer is that the most successful agents of the future will become much more than salespeople. They'll become strategists, publishers, and community leaders. AI has already moved beyond being a novelty. A 2026 NAR survey found that 92% of surveyed real estate professionals are either using AI or planning to use it, with saving time being its most frequently cited benefit. AI is also beginning to move beyond content creation and into workflows that can draft messages, update records, schedule follow-ups, and perform other tasks with less human intervention. That doesn't mean agents become less important. I think it means the things that make an agent valuable begin to change. If technology can help write your listing description, organize your database, summarize information, and handle repetitive tasks, then the competitive advantage isn't simply being able to do those things faster. It's knowing what deserves your attention in the first place.

That's where the strategist comes in. For years, real estate marketing has been built around visibility: post consistently, send mailers, run ads, make videos, and get your name in front of people. But when every agent has access to the same technology and can produce an endless amount of content, more content won't necessarily make someone more memorable. In fact, it may make being memorable harder. The future of marketing isn't going to belong to the agent who produces the most. It will belong to the agent who has something worth saying. That brings me to the second evolution: the agent as a publisher. When I say publisher, I don't mean every agent needs to start a magazine. I mean they need to start thinking like one. A publisher doesn't wake up every morning asking, "How can I promote myself today?" A publisher asks, "What does my audience want to know? What conversations are happening? What information is missing? Who has something valuable to contribute?" Imagine an agent who becomes the source for everything happening in their community. They interview local business owners, explain neighborhood changes, share market insights, highlight local events, introduce community leaders, and create conversations that extend far beyond buying and selling homes. That agent isn't simply marketing themselves. They're becoming part of the fabric of the community. And this matters even more as AI begins to influence how consumers discover professionals. NAR recently highlighted Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, as an emerging way for agents to become more visible when consumers ask AI questions such as "Who is the best real estate agent near me?" AI systems are increasingly synthesizing information from an individual's digital footprint to determine what—and who—to recommend. That changes the definition of online visibility. It's no longer enough to have a website or post occasionally on social media. Your reputation is becoming a collection of everything the internet can learn about you: your expertise, your reviews, your content, your community involvement, your media mentions, and the conversations you're contributing to. In other words, your digital footprint is becoming part of your professional reputation.

This is where I think the third evolution becomes the most important: the agent as a community leader. Technology can tell me the median price in a neighborhood. It can summarize market statistics. It can compare homes and answer questions about a city. But it can't replace someone who actually knows the people and places behind those numbers. It doesn't know the local business owner who's been there for thirty years. It doesn't know which neighborhood is quietly changing before the statistics reflect it. And it doesn't build the kind of trust that comes from consistently showing up for a community. That is something agents can own. The opportunity isn't to compete with technology. It's to use technology to create more time for the things technology can't replicate. Use AI to handle the repetitive work, then spend that saved time building relationships. Use technology to help create content, then use your own experience and perspective to make it worth reading. Use digital tools to expand your reach, but make sure what people find when they reach you actually reflects who you are. I believe we're moving from a world where agents competed for attention to one where they'll compete for trust. From generating leads to building audiences. From creating advertisements to creating communities. And from simply using technology to work faster to using technology to become more valuable. The real estate agent of the future isn't disappearing. They're evolving. And the agents who recognize that evolution early may have the greatest opportunity to define what comes next.
